3. The effects of harsh upbringing on Jaja by his father in the novel is negative as it led to his rebellion from the beginning of the novel, Jaja refuses to receive the holy communion because the
"water" gives him bad breath. An action which was in outright defiance to his struct father's authority.
Emotionally shattered by his father's autocratic was Jaja's only way to liberty was to renal against the man whom he seas as a bully. when his father embarrasses his sister for coming second, Jaja encourage her by letting her know that she does not have to come first to be the best. Jaja begins to loose respect for his father as a result of his overhearing attitude. As a character, Jaja and his sister, Kambili initially seas their father as their hero but when they visit their aunty's place during the holidays they discoverer personal freedom. They realize that their father had been too strict with them. Jaja is also arranged with his father for the harsh treatment method in he and his sister and construct beating of his mother. When his father violently throws a issal at him for his refusal to receive the holy communion his mother simply entered the room quickly and faces the broken Reggie which was hit by the missalo after Jaja parries it.
Jaja's rebellion results in his not coming to dinner table with them as he openly expresses his displeasure with his father's strict ways.

8. Santiago, the old man as a stoic and optimistic ma and that us why he held on to his catch despite the challenges he faced at sea with the sharks Santiago epitomes man's struggle against defeat. Despite the fact that people believe he has gone "Salao" unlucky is still propelled by his belief in his ability to succeed at sea. anybody would give up after few days but he chooses to endure eighty four fruitless days at sea and jurneys father into a place called "The great wall" on the eighty fifth day even when the boy (his apprentice, abedons his boat and goes with a luckier boat, he raw) doubted his own ability although while struggling at sea with the big fish, him. his stoicism made the boy's faith in him unwavering as the boy indicates during his occasional visits when they sit to discuss baseball and some other things even while other fishers man make him of the old man, he stricks to him. the old mans stoicism made him struggle with the skiff during his attempt to catch the gis fish. He also struggles with other fish such as man-of-war, Bonito, Cat fish etc. In his struggle w
